(btw you can listen to some of my favourite fall out boy songs with the ipod on the left! - unfortunately on desktop only, and you have to scroll back up everytime u want 2 change the songs, i can barely understand javascript sorry :(

i list songs i like from each album at the very end of this too if ur interested)

I hate using this term but I have been so fucking emo since like, the beginning of February. All I can listen to is FALL OUT BOY , all I do is cry and contemplate slitting my wrists and try to get off my grandmas couch in time to attend therapy sessions.

I have not listened to any “emo” music since 2020. I had a huge emo phase from 2014 to 2017. My chemical romance were my everything (kind of over them now that im going back to exploring “emo” music – probably due to how the mcr fandom behaves... put me off them a bit) and I always did like fall out boy but I was just a casual listener, I think I ever only looked up the meaning of one fall out boy song when I listened to them (it was “I Slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me”) but because I was dealing with all these emotions when it came to my partner, the dramatic break up lyrics written by pete wentz, coming out of the mouth white boy blue eyed soul voiced patrick stump just did something for me.

For a while I thought I was over emo/pop punk, but I realised for most of this genre, I think you have to be feeling a certain way for this music not to come off as whiny, melodramatic and annoying. I remember my midwest emo phase too, it was just before I really got into grunge/90s rock and returning to that just makes me sad. I remember self harming and going thru alot when i was rlly into midwest emo stuff but I wont get into that.

I think learning more about FOB made me respect them alot more than I used to. They have hardcore roots and some of the members were straight edge punks. Pete (you prob already mr wentz but hes the bassist and songwriter for FOB) and Andy were in a band called RACETRAITOR - and they were really fucking radical when it came to making music about white supremacy and systemic racism. Andy was also in a band before racetraitor called KILLTHESLAVEMASTER. In fact Andy (drummer for FOB) has stayed true to his roots, he's still a straight edge vegan and still plays for racetraitor.
Pete was the frontman of a metalcore band called ARMA ANGELUS, in which Joe (guitarist for FOB) was the guitarist for one tour, and Patrick (lead vocalist + guitarist for FOB) was the drummer for their last 2 shows before they disbanded and formed fall out boy. its really cool to me

gonna link the one and only album arma angelus recorded + their last performance where joe and patrick are playing for the band and racetraitor's most well known and first album below (if you're into hardcore ofc, i like this so thats why im reccing):

    ARMA ANGELUS:

    RACETRAITOR:

Back to fall out boy – When I was into fall out boy I only listened to their big albums – from under the cork tree, infinity on high, folie a deux, save rock and roll and american beauty/american psycho. I never did explore take this to your grave or evening out with your girlfriend and by the time MAN I A came out I was over pop punk and emo shit in general.

I've always appreciated FOB because they were clearly influenced by alot of non-rock genres along with metal and punk, like soul, RnB, blues and hip hop and Patrick Stump as a vocialist is incredible, and stood out compared to the other lead singers in that genre (like Hayley Willams :p), and as FOB matured, their lyrics got a lot less whiny.

I have found I really like take this to your grave. A lot of the lyrics are catty and plain cruel at times, one could say MISOGYNISTIC! but some of the lyrics (unfortunately) resonate a lot with me, especially from the song “The pros and cons of breathing” – in particular these lyrics:

(you can listen to this song thru the player)

“I wish that I was as invisible as you make me feel”

    and

“Woah, I want to hate you half as much as I hate my - Self...”

This is just because I was/am (we havent offically broken up but it feels like we arent even dating at the time me writing this) in a relationship that was really one sided – I did a lot for my partner in terms trying to make him (he uses he/him pronouns but isn't a man - feel like I need to explain this to people because when I refer to my partner with his preferred pronouns, their brains short circuit when they remember I'm a lesbian. he's just a butch lesbian who prefers those pronouns ) feel loved and seen and I didnt get much of that in return. (I had the worst valentines day with him which I will probably get into later).

I want to hate him for all of that but I know it wasnt malicious, and he did try in some aspects, like always willing to let me rant and vent, but that was the extent he would go. It seemed like he wasnt prepared to be slightly inconvenienced even though I always did that for him, more than just slightly. I would travel 2 hrs just to see him as often as I could and as much as he would let me.

I'm not sure if pete had that intention as his motivation was pure anger (so it seems).

Also been delving into 2000s fall out boy fandom (livejournal browsing is so fun) because as I mentioned before, I was never deeply in love with them like I was with my chemical romance.

I love that im looking at this stuff now that I know I am a lesbian. I remember forcing myself to think joe, andy and patrick were the ones I found cute and wanted to fuck when I was interacting with ppl who liked FOB (mainly becuz they were quiet in interviews so 2 me that meant they werent annoying)

Not sure why I never rlly liked pete, I think its because I think I didnt like that he got all the attention and he wasnt even the frontman? And also because he is/was so stereotypically emo cute/hot with the way he did his hair and the way he dressed and did his eyeliner etc. I am also never fond of the most liked member of bands – too much attention just makes me want to know more about the members that dont get the same attention.

Bandom has NOT changed either, from 2005 to this day the majority of what people talk about when it comes to these bands is how attractive they think the band members are or shipping band mates with each other (some from other bands *cough* mikey way and pete wentz *cough*. Its just not for me which is why I dont “do” fandom and havent done so since 2020, its kind of annoying!

Also been enjoying reading magazine articles about the band and old interviews – I know I was into fall out boy when they were back to being on pop radio with songs like "Centuries" in 2015 but knowing they were also super famous in the 2000s feels so surreal? Like I dont know why I cant comprehend it – maybe its because today rock doesnt have much of a presence in popular culture rn so knowing they were on TRL is interesting to me.

But then again, metallica were on TRL... I think pre 2010 was a easier time for crossover and being exposed to different genres and subcultures through the mainstream (not necessarily a good thing for it be mainstream but I think its good if people are aware of how diverse music can be!!!)

Like pete wentz, at one point was more famous than bruno mars (a la that photo), its interesting to think about.

People say pop culture died in 2008 and like.... I have to say it, I think theyre right.

they r so cute as happy tree friends like i always just saw awww when i think abt them or watch the carpal tunnel vid... i might get a HTF plush. will make me look super edgy tho (if it were 2007 (–˛ — º))
